Being in front of a large audience could make you feel confident and nervous at the same time. Your ability to convey a message should be articulate, concise and well-delivered to the audience listening to you. Public speaking is one of the essential skills that everyone should acquire. Having excellent communication skills helps one to survive in any field that one desires comfortably. It could be a determining factor in many things such as your career development, your business growth, and even in the relationships, you have with your family and friends.  Below are the 4E’s that constitute public speaking:

1) Exercise

Everyone feels nervous every time they do public speaking. One may experience pounding hearts and trembling hands. Do not let these feelings take over you to the point that you cannot process and read your speech well in front. Once you are on stage, some nerves will fade away. The best way to overcome anxiety is to plan for the things that you have to do, prepare, and exercise your communication skills. Take time to study your notes several times. Once you feel comfortable with your presentation, practice more and more. Exercise your confidence by looking up and talking in front of a mirror, videotape yourself, or get a friend to advice you on your performance. Be positive performing your speech; you will surely do well!

2) Engage

Before you begin to deliver your message, engage with your audience first. Make sure you catch their attention in the first 30 seconds. You have to know and understand your audience. This will help you in choosing the right words for your specific audience .i.e. when your audience consists of youth, you can speak to them as casual as possible. Additionally, the content of your presentation could as well be determined if you have the knowledge about your audience.

3) Empower

Essentially, giving a speech in public should have an empowering message. You have to motivate your audience. Remember that the purpose of public speaking is not just about you but most importantly is about your audience, and how they will learn from the message of your presentation. When delivering a speech, you should prioritize the goal of your message, and it should remain relevant even after your speech.

4) End

Great presentations start strong and finish stronger. Leave them with smiles on their faces knowing that you gave it your best shot. After that, you will build your confidence in public speaking!

Public Speaking is a continuous process of learning and practicing until that time when you deliver your speech without anxiety. It is okay to feel a little tensed and very normal. But at least, you can now minimize it.
